What Really Makes an Artist Successful? It’s Not Talent | Artist to Artist with Shilpa Lalit | Episode 1

Have you ever looked at another artist’s work and wondered, “Will I ever be that good? Do I really have what it takes to become a successful artist?”

I think almost every artist has asked themselves these questions at some point. I certainly have.

When we see a beautiful painting, a successful art exhibition or an artist with thousands of followers, it's easy to assume that they must have been born with extraordinary talent.

But after years of painting, teaching and building my own journey as an artist, I have come to believe something very different.

Talent might help you begin, but it is not what keeps you going.

And it certainly isn't the only thing that makes an artist successful.

1. The secret is to keep showing up

There will be days when you feel incredibly inspired. You'll pick up your brushes, lose yourself in your colours and create something that makes your heart happy. And then there will be days when absolutely nothing seems to work! Your colours won't cooperate, your painting won't look the way you imagined, and you might even wonder why you started in the first place. I've had those days too. But one thing I've learned over the years is that we cannot wait for inspiration to arrive every single time we want to create.

Sometimes we simply have to show up. Even if it's just for 20 minutes. Even if all we do is experiment with colours, practise a technique or make a few marks on a canvas.Every little effort counts. The paintings you create today might not look anything like the paintings you dream of creating tomorrow. But each one is helping you get there.

2. Stop comparing your beginning to someone else's journey

One of the biggest challenges we face as artists is comparison. Social media makes it incredibly easy to see everyone else's beautiful finished paintings, successful exhibitions, sold-out workshops and exciting opportunities. But what we don't always see are the years of practice, the rejected paintings, the disappointments and the countless hours spent learning. We see the finished painting, not the hundreds of brushstrokes that came before it.

Your artistic journey is going to look different from everyone else's. And that's perfectly fine. Some artists discover their style early. Others spend years experimenting with different mediums and techniques. Some find commercial success quickly. Others build their careers slowly, one painting and one opportunity at a time.

Someone else's success does not take anything away from your own possibilities. Instead of comparing your work with another artist's, try comparing your paintings today with the ones you created a year ago. You might be surprised by how far you've come.

3. Be willing to create imperfect art

I truly believe that perfectionism can become one of the biggest obstacles in an artist's journey. We sometimes become so worried about creating a beautiful painting that we forget to enjoy the actual process of painting. What if the colours don't work? What if the proportions are wrong? What if nobody likes it? But what if we allowed ourselves to make mistakes?

Some of my most valuable lessons have come from paintings that didn't turn out the way I had planned. They taught me to experiment, find solutions, understand my materials and trust myself a little more. Not every painting needs to become a masterpiece. Some paintings are simply there to teach us something. Give yourself permission to create art that nobody else will ever see. Paint because you love painting.

4. Success is not always measured by sales or followers

Of course, selling paintings, participating in exhibitions and growing an audience are wonderful milestones. As professional artists, many of us work incredibly hard towards them. But I also believe that success can mean different things at different stages of our lives. For someone who has never painted before, completing their first canvas can be a huge achievement.

For another artist, success might mean finding the courage to share their work publicly. For someone else, it could mean making their first sale, teaching their first workshop or finally discovering their own artistic voice. And sometimes success is simply finding an hour in your busy day to sit with your paints and do something that brings you peace. Don't forget to celebrate those little milestones. They matter more than you think.

5. Consistency, patience and a little courage

If there's one thing I would love every aspiring artist to understand, it's that building an artistic life takes time. You need patience to develop your skills, consistency to improve and courage to put your work into the world. There will be opportunities that don't work out. Paintings that don't sell. Social media posts that hardly anyone sees. But none of those experiences defines your worth as an artist.

Keep learning. Keep experimenting. Keep sharing your work. And most importantly, keep creating. You never know which painting, conversation or opportunity might open a beautiful new door for you.

A little reminder from me to you

You don't have to be the most talented artist in the room. You don't have to have everything figured out. And you certainly don't need to wait until you feel ready to call yourself an artist. Just keep showing up for your art, one painting at a time. Looking back on my own journey, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. But I'm equally grateful for all those ordinary days spent in my studio, learning, experimenting and simply doing what I love. Because those ordinary days are what make this beautiful artist life possible.
